Singapore Sling

Hello friends, luckily, no rain today. I got up this morning and went to the Singapore Art Museum, where I saw art from all around South East Asia. It was very nice. Later, I went to the illustrious Raffles Hotel--the iconic hotel of Colonial travel in the East, or so I'm told, and home to the original Singapore Sling. It was very fancy.
I spent the rest of the day wandering through Chinatown and Little India. It was nice, but not terribly exciting.
Tomorrow, I head north to Kuala Lipis, Malaysia on the Jungle Railway. It's the original British rail line and it goes straight through the interior of Malaysia. The views are supposed to be spectacular. From Kuala Lipis I head into the jungle (finally!).
I went to services at the synagogue here last night. The community here is originally from Iraq. The synagogue is about 130 years old. I had dinner with everyone after the service. It was very nice.
Stay well friends!
Lauren

Hi Lauren;
Your upcoming rail excursion to Kuala Lipis on the Jungle Express sounds boring and unexciting. Your description of it as "spectacular" evokes none of the exhileration of "awesomness" or "stupendicity"! I'm rather surprised that you'd bother to undertake such a mundane venture. One would hope that the actual trip will exceed the lackluster previews.

What an abysmal winter! Note that I refer to the lower case, meteorological variety, not the upper case, Lauren Emily type. There's not enough snow to ski (nordic, not alpine) and not enough grass to play golf. Four or five years ago I played four rounds in December, including one round after Christmas. I could have played this past December but there was so much hype about the courses being open on TV that it was a foregone conclusion the courses would be jammed on any "playable" day. And besides, with the four rounds from four or five years ago, I've got my December bragging rights firmly established.

Thanks for the dimensional information about Angkor Wat. I nearly missed seeing it since you appended it as a comment to your own blog. Is that a little bit like talking to yourself? Just so you don't lose any self-contested arguments. That would bode ill for a future counsellor wannabee. Back to Angkor Wat, I was unaware of a moat around the site. I don't recall reading about that in any of the earlier info I'd seen. Any alligators in it?

And just for your edification, I calculate that if the area of the Angkor Wat complex is exactly the 200 acres you mentioned, then the football field equivalent is 161.33338, not including the end zones. Taking them into account, the FFE (football field equivalent) is reduced to 134.4447! (Can you tell what an exciting Saturday afternoon this is?)

I hadn't mentioned earleir that I must credit you with a linguistic "gotcha" with your use of the word "tessellated" to describe the features of a mosque that you visited a week or so ago. I envisioned "crenelated" or "castellated" but I WAS aware that neither of those terms would normally describe any feature of a mosque. So I HAD to look it up!
1 - zip!

It appears that the inclement weather in "Singapour" didn't dampen your spirit for exploration and that is a bonus for your readers. Your reporting has been exceptionalistical and I appreciate the frequency. Between the geographical re-education that I'm experiencing and the opportunity to comment, I've been able to keep occupied between long winter naps!

Good health and stupendifying sight-seeing!

George

Hi everyone. Lauren said we won't hear from her for a few days while she is in the jungle. She didn't think she would be able to write before she began her tour. Take care, Nancy
