Vientiane Palace

Hello friends, I'm reporting today from Vientiane. Vientiane Palace is a restaurant I used to go to in Madison when I was in college. I recall the food there being more delicious than the food here....
Tonight I head to Bangkok. I'll get there in the morning. I need to pick up a new bank card, plane tickets and get my India visa in the works. After I've accomplished these things I have till March 11 to do as I please. I'm considering going back to the islands of Southern Thailand. Perhaps I'll dive again!
I think my entries have been brief lately because I've been meeting so many people in Laos. I was lonely in Thailand, but most of the travelers in Laos are backpackers and I've met lots of fun people.
I enjoyed my time in Laos, but I'm not sure I'd come back here. Vientiane reminds me a little bit of Chiang Mai, but quieter. I went to the National Museum this afternoon, and it was full of pictures of "US Imperialists and their puppets." Lots o' thinly veiled propoganda. Fun for the whole family.
Don't get stuck in the snow!
Love,
Lauren

It's not surprising that you're considering traveling back to Thailand. When folks have asked about you and your travels I've taken the liberty to tell them it appears that to date, Thailand has been your favorite destination, what with the diving, elephant riding, cooking classes, rock climbing and sunset beach! Possibly it's just my own personal preference that watching the sun set on a warm sandy beach while lounging in a hammock and sipping a cool one has some advantages over tubing down a river in the company of water buffalo.......but then maybe that's just a matter of what one enjoys!

Since you're in Asia, you must be aware of the big stock market selloff that started in China and reverberated around the other side of the world to New York yesterday. It was so bad that I was considering jumping out the window, but then my wife reminded me that we live on the first floor and that there was a 2 foot cushion of snow below, so fortunately, I thought better of the whole thing and am trying to take the long term perspective.

Ah yes, let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. By tomorrow, we may actually have some additional white stuff. We've been hearing about this coming for over a week now. Do they publish storm warnings in Asia when they expect it to rain? You can hardly get the jist of any TV program these days what with all the storm warnings pasted across the screen. We've developed into a state of wimps!

How are you going to be able to adjust to a relatively stationary way of life once you get to India, after moving about from place to place these last three months? Has the realization dawned upon you that you've been "on the road" for three months now? And do you have a "fall back" plan in the event that staying in India for three months turns out not to be what you'd expected? Just some questions that come to mind on occasion.

Looking forward to hearing about Bangkok!

Mmmmm.. squash curry at VienTien palace in Madison... so sad to hear the "real" thing isn't as marvelous. I dream of that stuff! (Not that this comment had much of anything to do with travelling, but I just HAD to lend my own props to my fave restaurant in Madison) Miss you!
