Rat!
Hello friends, we got our first serious monsoon rain yesterday afternoon. It rained and thundered like it was going out of style for about an hour and a half. Luckily I was inside when it hit.
I got home and my roommate, Rose, was upset. Why you ask?
First, I should explain that we don't have showers here. Just a tap and a bucket. You fill the bucket with water and then use a little pitcher to pour water over your head. Needless to say, I'm looking forward to a shower when I get home. At least the water is warm.
Anyhoo, Rose, was bathing during the rain when she heard a little noise coming from the drain. The drain covers are not sealed in our house. Much to her dismay, a rat crawled up through the drain and into the bathroom! We thought the rat left the way it came, but it made a reappearance this morning. I was meditating and hear her start to scream. She got the maintenance guy who waters the sidewalks and driveway around the house every morning (I don't get it either...) to come in and kill it. The rat was hiding behind the fridge. He hit it with a stick, Rose screamed and ran out of the house and I couldn't help but laugh. Then the guy picked it up by the tail and kept bopping the rat on the head to make sure it was dead. Then he threw it in a ditch.
Rose kept apologizing for interrupting my meditation. I assured her it was fine. Why would I want to meditate through such a hilarious episode???
I also had an ant caravan invade my bedroom. I think they were trying to get out of the rain. They were moving into a hole in my wall. I sprayed them with some poison and then slept in another room. They bite. No more ants this morning.
Practice today was not so great, but my back feels better. I really took it easy. My backbends are getting much better. I don't hate them anymore.
Stay well friends and delight in your rat-free (and cockroach-free) homes!
TTFN,
Lauren

Hi Lauren:
Well, your livestock-in the-house report makes it nearly mandatory that I offer a comment, probably because it is easy to see the humor in that situation from afar, but also because it brought to mind an "old saying" that we used in grade school to remember how to spell "Arithmetic". The key, of course, was the location where the poor rodent met his demise. What was he doing behind the refrigerator? Well, in the "old saying," A Rat In The House May Eat The Ice Cream, the first letter of each word spelled out "arithmetic". There was another for "geography" but we won't get into that. It can be assumed that this poor creature never made it to the ice cream, courtesy of the maintenance man. (Did he really water the sidewalk and driveway AFTER the monsoon hit?)
It appears from the tone of your rodent report and that of the ant caravan that you have adapted reasonably well to the difficulites of life in your present surroundings and to the rigors of your yoga practice or routine or whatever it is correctly referred to. I've followed your recent blog reports and wish that I could comment more frequently or intelligently, but what can you expect from a guy who thought that Mariachi D was a Caribbean Rock Band?
Habitat-wise, Bud's Bunch has the month of June free to pursue other interests. There are some projects in the works but nothing at the moment that requires our variety of specialized skills. With the price of land acquisition rapidly escalating in the core cities, a lot of the Habitat construction is taking place in the suburbs like Chaska, Woodbury, Brooklyn Park and St, Paul Park. The homes are still single family dwellings but they tend to be multi-family buildings, separate but conjoined, if that makes sense.
Don Severson from the crew is getting married at the end of June. He's been a widow for some three years or more. I don't know if you specifically recall him or not but he used to frequently bring goodies, other than the donut holes, baked by one of his "admiring ladies". However, his bride-to-be is not one of those that "wooed with food". Not sure what the message there is.
I've been doing a little fishing and have been out on the golf course......you couldn't call what I've been doing on the golf course "golfing"! It would give the sport a bad name.
I hope that you continue to enjoy the remainder of your journey and have a safe trip home. If you are planning on traveling to Nashville on the 19th of August, it appears that your hopes of attending the State Fair won't be realized.......it doesn't start until the 23rd of August. But then, there's not much new there from one year to the next. With time so short and probably lots to do to prepare for your next adventure, as well as the wedding and all the re-acquainting with family and friends after your prolonged absence, I realize that there may not be an opportunity to see you in the near future. I'll try to keep you advised of our location via blog or e-mail in the event that you might have some spare time. Stay well!
Cheers!
George
