Genetic Diversity in the Food Supply

Hello friends, I thought I'd share this article from today's NY Times with you. It deals with a topic that I'm currently working on at FAO--preserving the genetic diversity of the world's food to avoid situations just like this one.

I can't figure out how to make the web address into a hyperlink, so you'll have to cut and paste into your browser. Sorry.
Enjoy.

interesting history of the banana.

i often wondered why they are so inexpensive when they are shipped so far, and stopped buying them long ago, in support of local food and local farms.

and i was just reading michael pollan's new book, IN DEFENSE OF FOOD, in which he cites a survey that asked american eaters: "assume you are alone on a desert island for one year and you can have water and one other food. pick the food that you think would be best for your health."

the choices were: corn, alfalfa sprouts, hot dogs, spinach, peaches, bananas, and milk chocolate.

the number one choice was the banana (42%). surprisingly, hot dogs and milk chocolate were the best, but only 4% and 3% chose them. yay! chocolate!

yes, we are reading your blog...
